AAG 2012 CFP China’s Agriculture and Food Security
Session Organizers: Wei Xu (wei.xu@uleth.ca)
It has been estimated that by the end of 2009, more than one billion people throughout the world, and particularly in developing countries, will not have enough food to meet their basic nutritional needs. As the most populous country in the world,Chinahas been constantly challenged to provide its citizens with physical and economic access to sufficient and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs for an active and healthy life. While the economic success, achieved through economic reforms and market transitions over the last three decades, has fostered a tremendous reduction of poverty throughout the country, millions of people, especially in westernChina, remain below the poverty line, and their access to sufficient food is in peril. Lester Brown’s alarming warning “Who will feedChina?” reminds everyone that there is an increasing threat toChina’s food security during its course towards modernization. With its natural constraints and surging demand for grain in recent years, the future prospect of food security has not changed, andChinaoften finds itself in the middle of a raucous debate about the future of global food security. How hasChina’s agriculture changed in recent years in response to the continuous challenges of food security? What are the emerging factors that influenceChina’s food production chains and agricultural sectors? This session welcomes the papers addressingChina’s Agriculture and Food Security and related issues.
