The 110th Anniversary of the Geographical Society of China & China Conference on Geography 2019 held in Beijing

The 110th Anniversary of the Geographical Society of China (GSC) & the China Conference on Geography 2019 was held at China National Convention Center (CNCC), Beijing, China and Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGNSRR) from November 1st to 3rd, 2019. Under the theme of “Innovation, Development and Glory - Theory and Practice of Chinese Geography”, the event attracted about 3000 participants from more than 20 countries of the world.




The anniversary celebration kicked off on the morning of Nov. 2nd at CNCC. The opening ceremony was chaired by Prof. Bojie Fu, Director of Supervisory Committee of the GSC, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). At first, Prof. Fahu Chen, President of the GSC, Academician of CAS, Director of Tibetan Plateau Research, CAS, made a warm welcome speech on behalf of the GSC. Then, the invited guests representing national and international scientific organizations as well as executives on behalf of “sister organizations” of the GSC from home and abroad delivered congratulations successively, including Prof. Zhongli Ding, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Vice President of the CAS, Prof. Jun Song, Secretary of Party Committee, Secretary of Secretariat of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), Prof. Michael Meadows, Former Secretary General of the International Geographical Union (IGU), Prof. Dahe Qin, President of the Asian Geographical Association (AGA), Director of Academic Committee of CAS, Academician of CAS, Prof. Huijun Wang, President of the Chinese Meteorological Society, Academician of CAS, Prof. Shengkui Cheng, President of the China Society of Natural Resources and Prof. Yuji Murayama, President of the Association of Japanese Geographers. The remarks were followed by congratulatory videos from the leadership of two renowned geographical societies with long history as well – one by Prof. Joe Smith, Director of the Royal Geographical Society with Institute of British Geographers (RGS-IBG), the other by Prof. Nikolay Kasimov, First Vice President of the Russian Geographical Society.




After the opening ceremony, 11 reputable geographers were invited to give keynote lectures during the plenary session, including Development of Geographical Society of China & Development of Chinese Geography by Prof. Fahu Chen, Arctic Lakes in the Anthropocene: Using the Past to Better Predict the Future by Prof. John P. Smol (Canada), The Evolution of Real-Time Interactive GIS: A Framework for Meeting International Health and Sustainable Development Goals by Dr. Douglas Richardson (USA), The Geography of Discontent and the Revenge of the Places that Don’t Matter by Prof. Andrés Rodríguez-Pose (Spain), United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Historical Tasks of Geography by Prof. Bojie Fu, Geographical Conditions and National Strategy by Prof. Dadao Lu, The Second Tibetan Plateau Scientific Expedition and Research by Prof. Tandong Yao, Research on Big Earth Data in Support of Sustainable Development Goals by Prof. Huadong Guo, Spatial Organization Pathway for Territorial Function-structure: Discussion on Implementation of Major Function Zoning Strategy in Territorial Spatial Planning by Prof. Jie Fan, Changes to Geographical Research in the New Era by Prof. Changqing Song, Great Geopolitical Game between China and United States in the 21st Century by Prof. Debin Du.


Apart from keynote lectures, a total of 61 scientific sessions were organized and more than 1300 scholars presented their research, which focused on the key and hot issues of the discipline as well as the strategic demands of the state, covered different and various categories of research including theories and approaches, comprehensive research of geography, in particular the human-land relationship system, integrated research, and some specific themes such as “Belt and Road Initiative” and beautiful China construction and sustainability. To promote international cooperation, five international sessions were arranged during the conference, such as “Geography and Sustainability”, “Research and Cooperation among Young Geographers from Developing Countries”, “Comparative Study on Sino-Japanese Geography”, etc.


One of the highlights of the conference - the 85th Anniversary of the Establishment of Acta Geographica Sinica was held on Nov. 1st at IGNSRR. The Most Influential Paper Award and the Outstanding Contribution Award were presented to the scholars and the editors respectively, moreover, several important rankings by the journal – such as ranking on the citations, the most downloaded papers as well as top organizations with the largest number of published papers were also announced.


In addition, the Council Meeting of the Asian Geographical Association 2019 convened on the same day at IGSNRR. The AGA Council adopted the statutes, approved the membership application from the Geographical Society of Uzbekistan to join the AGA and decided the 5th Asian Conference on Geography will be held at Thai Nguyen University, Vietnam in 2021.



China Conference on Geography


In 2001, the Geographical Society of China inaugurated its first National Annual Conference on Geography. Then the annual conferences successively took place in Shanghai, Beijing, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Lanzhou, Nanjing, Changchun, Urumqi, Kaifeng and Chengdu. The Annual Conference 2009 was held in conjunction with the 100th Anniversary of the GSC and the Annual Conference 2016 convened conjointly with the 33rd International Geographical Congress. After the discussion by the Standing Committee of the GSC, to build a higher quality, multifunctional and internationalized brand scientific event, since 2018, the GSC Annual Conference on Geography was given a new name “China Conference on Geography”, abbreviated to CCG. In 2018, the 1st CCG convened in Xi’an, and more than 4000 geographers worldwide participated in the conference. The year 2019 remarks the 110th Anniversary of the founding of the GSC. The 110th Anniversary of the Geographical Society of China (GSC) & the China Conference on Geography 2019 was scheduled on November 1st to 3rd, 2019 in Beijing.
