On April 23rd, 2022, the International Geographical Union (IGU) officially announced the winners of the IGU honors and awards. Four Chinese geographers won IGU awards 2022 in the following three categories:
Prof. Dahe QIN, Academician, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) granted the IGU Lauréat d’Honneur 2022 for his pioneer, world class research on the cryosphere, climate change and sustainable development, and his sterling work for the union as Chair of the Scientific Committee for the 33rd IGC in Beijing in 2016. This award was established to recognize individuals who have achieved particular distinction or who have rendered outstanding service in the work of the IGU or in international geography. Prof. Qin was the second Chinese recipient of this prestigious award of the IGU after Prof. Bingwei HUANG, who received this honor in 1996.

Prof. Yansui LIU, Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resource Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGSNRR, CAS) received the IGU Award for Distinguished Practice for his international research contributions that have made substantial contributions to scientific decision-making and practice in relation to land use, rural poverty reduction and revitalization, and in the geographical application of agricultural engineering. This award was inaugurated this year and was to recognize geographers whose work is notable for its adoption and responsible application by diverse communities in and outside the academy.
Prof. Yansui LIU, awardee of the IGU Award for Distinguished Practice
Two young Chinese geographers won the IGU Early Career Award. The IGU Early Career Award in Geography was also created in 2022 and was instituted to recognize excellence in research by scholars during the decade after completing their formal education in geography.
Prof. Shuai WANG, Beijing Normal University, won this award for his sustained research integrated research on ecosystem services and social-ecological systems sustainability in environmentally fragile areas.

Dr. Yuanyuan YANG, IGSNRR, CAS, another Chinese winner of the same award, was recognized by the IGU for her sustained research on land change and modelling, interdisciplinary analysis of human-environment interactions, urban-rural integration and rural revitalization, her work on rural land conversions, especially relating to rural settlements and arable land under rapid urbanization and development of an optimal land allocation model.

In 2022, the IGU individual awards comprising four categories will be presented to 14 scientists in total.
